Contributed by: Rabbi Haim Shaul

The Shabbat before Purim, a special maftir aliya is read. This portion in Devarim (Deuteronomy) Chapter 25, verses 17-19, deals with the commandment to remember how the Amalekites attacked us mercilessly when we left Egypt. Their total lack of fear of G-d and disregard of the miraculous occurrences that accompanied our departure from Egypt, are the symbols of true evil, never to be forgotten.

This misvah of reading Parashat Zachor is fulfilled before Purim, since Haman was a descendant of Amalek. Here in lies another lesson to be learnt from the Megillah, to never forget the evil of Amalek.

All men above 13 years are obligated to fulfill this Mitzvah. Women also should make every effort to attend this special Shabbat and hear this portion read.
