Browse Zemanim: Hanoukah: Lighting with an Electric Hanukiah
Does one fulfill the misvah of Hanukah with an electric Hanukiah?

One does not fulfill the misvah of lighting with electricity. Though there are sects in Brooklyn that do light with electricity, one does not fulfill the misvah in such a fashion and one is permitted to recite the blessings in such a Hanukiah.

We must light a Hanukiah with oil and wicks because our Hanukiah must be similar to the Menorah that stood in the Bet Hamiqdash. It was with oil that the miracle occurred, and it must be with oil that we commemorate the day.

If one does not have oil or wax candles, he may light with an electric Hanukiah, but does not recite a blessing.
